Psalm 65:7 (New International Version)
7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.

On a recent cruise to Mexico, what began as an exciting adventure quickly turned into a lesson in faith. As we left port, the weather turned gray, the wind picked up, and soon the ship began to rock with the waves. Plates slid slightly on tables, the hallways seemed to tilt with every motion, and sleep that first night was nearly impossible. The sea’s rhythm was constant and unpredictable—up and down, side to side—reminding me how small and powerless we truly are when nature flexes her strength.

Somewhere around midnight, as I lay awake feeling each rise and fall of the vessel, I found my thoughts drifting toward the ship’s captain. I realized that although I couldn’t control the winds or calm the waves, the captain and his crew were trained for such conditions. They knew the vessel’s capabilities, the safest course, and the instruments that guided them through the storm. My role was simply to trust—that he would bring us safely through.

Psalm 65:7 says, “Who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.” This verse paints a vivid picture of God’s sovereignty. He not only quiets physical storms but also the storms within and around us. When life feels unsteady—when circumstances toss us about and we can’t find our footing—it’s comforting to know that the Lord Himself is at the helm.

Just as we must trust a ship’s captain to navigate the high seas, we must learn to trust God to guide us through life’s turbulence. Often, we want calm waters immediately. We pray for the storm to end, for the waves to settle—but sometimes, God allows us to experience the motion, the uncertainty, and even the discomfort. It’s in those moments that faith deepens. Trust isn’t proven when everything is smooth and peaceful; it’s forged when the world feels unstable, and we choose to believe that our Captain remains in control.

As dawn broke the next morning, the seas began to calm. By the afternoon, the sun was shining, and we sailed beneath brilliant blue skies. The transformation was incredible—just a few hours prior, the waters were fierce and restless; now they shimmered like glass. Laughter and music drifted across the deck, families reunited for breakfast, and even the horizon seemed friendlier. The contrast was striking—and I couldn’t help but think how much that mirrored life’s journey with God.

When we emerge from a storm—whether emotional, spiritual, or physical—we often appreciate peace more deeply. Calm waters become a reminder of His faithfulness. The same God who “stills the roaring of the seas” also brings rest to our souls.

The next time life tosses you about and you feel unsteady, remember the Captain who commands both wind and wave. He knows the course ahead, even when visibility is poor. Hold tight to His promises. Trust that the One who brought you into the storm will surely bring you through it—and somewhere ahead, beyond the wind and rain, waits a horizon of peace and joy only He could provide.
